“£600 for a 4hr evening wedding booking!!, that can’t be right”

Well, it depends… if your DJ is just turning up and “pressing play” then I could see how you’d look at it that way.

But let’s take a look at the kind of time I’d be spending on your wedding…

Initial meeting (to get to know each other a little bit, see if we can work together and what your vision for your wedding day is) = 1hr

Office Admin (prep. contract, emails, phone calls, day to day admin. etc.) = 1hr

Listening to and downloading music (keeping my catalogue fresh and up to date) = 1hr

Pre-wedding Skype or meeting (final chat through about a month before the big day) = 1 1/2hrs

Music prep. (getting together the music for your wedding only) = 30mins to 1hr (minimum)

Driving to and setting up for your wedding (it takes about an hour to set up at most venues, plus the driving time) = minimum of 1 1/4 hrs to 2hrs

Playing your 4hr evening disco (in reality, if all of the above has been done, the easy bit!) = 4hrs

Packing up and driving home again = minimum of 1 1/4 hrs to 2hrs

So, a 4hr evening booking is more like 10 1/2 hrs (minimum) of my time. So, that £600 evening booking works out at just over £57 an hour.

Then, when you take off Tax, National Insurance, Public Liability Insurance, Vehicle Insurance and Expenses, Advertising, Music and all the other overheads along with the approx. £17k worth of kit I own and maintain along with a vehicle big enough to move it all around… You’re getting a bargain!

With an all day or wedding breakfast and evening package, those timings go up quite considerably. In some case, it’ll almost double if you take into consideration editing tracks for during the service, preparation/rehearsal time for what I’m going to say, even more planning to make sure I understand exactly what it is you want and more emails etc…

The advantage of all of the above is simple… you get a wedding reception the way you want it to be, your music, your timings, proper introductions, special moments bought to the fore… a day to remember. Isn’t that what you want?

You can always find most things cheaper, but expensive things tend to be expensive for a reason!

If your getting quotes from DJs that are less than this, what are they leaving out? and how’s that going to affect your day…
